PORN SODA: Past selves →
Today I finally succumbed and gave my school some alumnus-dollars. This, after many dodged phone calls and accumulated reminder letters, felt less like a kind of surrender than I’d anticipated. It was a tiny amount, one whose paltriness enshrined the punk-ass attitude I held about the alumni…
I think your writing has improved a lot since last year, not that you were that bad, but this...

Entertainment as timekeeping. The sense that what you watched or listened to could lay structure upon a day, give it the feeling of undisputed progression, of passage between points that you shared with everyone else. I remember vividly the first time I heard a Trojan ad on my local Clear Channel…
The real irony here is that my parents always lamented the fact that we no longer share...

The (worst) best quote from the article: “Therefore, the girl willingly got herself into a state in which she could not act rationally. This, in my opinion, is equivalent to agreeing to anything that might happen to her while in this state.”
This is just priceless. So if someone gets drunk and I proceed to kill them, cut off their legs, flay them alive, etc. etc. etc. it’s okay...
Civilization V + Starcraft 2
I know not many of you guys are gamers, but Civilization V is in production, and should be out before Christmas 2010!
The screenshots remind me of Settlers of Catan with the hexagon tiles, and hopefully the new combat system is as cool as it can be. Even if you don’t usually like video games, if you like strategy games at all give Civ V a go.
In bigger gaming news, the Starcraft 2 Beta is...

I love the Joy of Painting. I love Bob Ross. I wish he was still alive. I think watching the Joy of Painting is a defining part of the childhood of any child of intellectuals growing up in the Northeast.
My Ongoing Studies
I will start taking a class on cryptography this Monday, and I just finished reading an 8 page handout for it in advance. This is a good thing.
I will not start taking a class on Civilization IV this Monday, but I just finished reading a 60 page document on the strategy of it. This is a not so good thing.
Supposedly I’m going to grow up someday. This is a doubtful thing.

Sick day / National holiday
Hey, Ray visited and got my whole room sick. Thanks Ray!

Today it was sunny and mild and I did not have to go to work. I woke up and fell back asleep and woke up again. I danced around to a Thelonious Monk record. I brushed my teeth three times. Trader Joe’s was empty, and I bought avocados and did pirouettes with my shopping cart. Unappetizing fluids leaked out of my nose and...

A bone to pick with This American Life
Rape is one of the bad things that can happen, but is “unwanted sex” not a thing either? Can’t two people get drunk, have consensual sex, and then regret the decision after the fact?

In their recent piece on the #1 party school in America (Penn State), This American Life listed the bad things that too much alcohol consumption can lead to, among which was “unwanted...
Things I Notice on the Web
1. Stupid people are always self-confident.
Corollary 1: Stupid people think they are smarter than actual specialists in their fields.
Corollary 2: In an hour of researching a topic on Wikipedia you are as qualified as a PhD. In two hours, you are now the definitive expert on the matter.
Corollary 3: Always doubt the conclusions of others. Instead come up with your own based on nothing.

Problems and solutions
It comes down whether you believe the human brain is something more than a deterministic machine with certain probabilities, or if it’s not. If it is deterministic, then these “fuzzy problems” with no real solutions do not exist, and instead we just lack the knowledge and computer power currently to solve them.
I like to think that we are deterministic and no more...
Space Battles
We all know that in the future that there will be no such things as space battles. Assuming we have meaningful spaceflight, being able to move faster than the speed of light, it’s exceedingly unlikely two armadas will ever meet in space. There will only be battles at space stations or planets, where it will be exceedingly impossible for a ship to land without being blown up. And why would...

very well, i concede the point: watching sporting events is not irrational, but it is extremely selfish

Arguments on the Internet...
1. i never said i didn’t enjoy watching the basketball game
Okay, so I’m confused why it’s irrational…
2. i never have said all people should lead the rational life; that was Socrates
I like how you don’t actually take a stance on this, so let’s assume by the way you said it you meant that we have no obligation to lead the rational life, in which case this argument...

Arguments on the Internet...
Here’s why what you are saying is most likely hypocritical.
You said “it is more intended to brainwash the spectators so they don’t reflect on what they’re doing and why they like something so irrational.” I can only conclude that “what they’re doing” means watching a sporting event live, and that what “they like” is sports in general, or perhaps...

Oh snap peas
Let me describe this post really quickly:
A man, who watches 70-minute speed runs of Paper Mario, finds no joy in watching professional athletes play a game he has never been good at.
But clearly he has a point: if it’s something he enjoys doing, like playing an old NES game, then watching people be good at it is fun, but if it’s something he’s never enjoyed, like sports, then...

1) Good writing again, keep it up.
2) I think a lot of physical activities become easier if you’ve played a sport a lot, and devoted enough hours to it. It generally helps all your motor skills, not just the ones you honed for your given sport. You start to think of your body as more of a tool, and begin to understand the subtleties in your motions, which you can change at a subconscious,...

In my college’s boxy reddish township, which was on the whole lovely and lush and without blemish, there was one place I’d without fail dread to go, and that place was the post office. Star Trek
This Thanksgiving weekend, I saw the new Star Trek movie on blu-ray on my parents massive TV, and it was an awesome experience. Watching all of the extras on the disc was awesome. You got to see how all the costumes were made, how all of the sound effects were created (by one guy!), and best of all: I got to see the cast having fun.
I always like to think that the cast on a movie, or any group...
